2015-16 Joseph P. Kennedy Scholarship Award Winners

THE JOSEPH P. KENNEDY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS 

Kennedy's Wildcat Den  has donated $10,000 towards scholarships to deserving UK students for many years. These awards were renamed the Joseph P. Kennedy Scholarships in 2001, in honor of the founder and president. Kennedy’s Wildcat Den continues the tradition and this year, once again, ten outstanding students were awarded scholarships. Besides having excellent grades, the candidates must be involved in extracurricular activities, especially benefiting charitable organizations.

Mariel Jackson is a junior from Murray, KY working on a major in Integrated Strategic Communication and a minor in Political Science. She is currently Student Body Vice President and a member of Chi Omega. She volunteers for Dance Blue, the Make-A-Wish foundation, and Wrap Up America.

Benjamin Norton is a graduate student from Lexington, KY. He is currently working on a Ph.D. in Musicology and Ethnomusicology, and will be working on a dissertation in those fields next year at UK. He finished his undergrad with Majors in Spanish, Film and Music as well as a minor in Arabic and Islamic studies. Benjamin has been published numerous times and co-founded a satirical paper called the UK Colonel and an organization called Homegrown Kentucky.

Malinda Massey is a junior pursuing majors in Secondary English Education and English, as well as a minor in Vocal Performance. She is the University of Kentucky Women’s Choir President and a College of Education Senator. Malinda has received many honors and awards including the Presidential Scholarship and she is a Chellgren Scholar.  

Danielle Wilson is a junior from Lexington, KY working on majors in Early Elementary Education and Psychology. She works as a tutor for the Carnegie Center, the Boys and Girls Club, and she runs her own ACT tutor business. She also donates her time to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. Danielle also works as a STEM Education Researcher.

Ailey Layson is a sophomore from Elizabethtown, KY. She is currently on the pre-dental track pursuing a major in Human Nutrition and a minor in Biology. She is Vice President of the Pre-dental Society/ Students United with America’s Tooth-fairy. She is also an Ambassador for the Summer Medical serving this past winter break in Honduras.

Mallory Zaino is a sophomore from Lexington, KY. She is double majoring in Biology and Spanish. She is the Philanthropy Chair for Alpha Delta Pi and works as a translator for several different organizations, including the Baby Health Services at the Lexington Medical Clinic.

Joshua Kaine is a Medical School student from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is involved in several different organizations including the Ultrasound Interest Group and the Salvation Army student run free clinic. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Chemical Society, the American Physics Society, Pi Beta Kappa and Sigma Pi Sigma.

Alex Wade is a Medical Student from Lexington, KY. He is a member of The University of Kentucky Appeals Board and The University of Kentucky Club Water Polo Team. In addition, Alex is the Community Service Chair for the College of Medicine and founded the UK Chapter of Wrap Up America.

Joye Allen is a Pharmacy and Public Health Student from Lexington, KY. Joye speaks three languages (English, French and Bambara) and worked as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali for two years. She has been published several times and is a dedicated Volunteer to the International Book Project in Lexington.

Austin Mullen in a junior at the University of Kentucky working on degrees in Marketing and Management. He is currently very involved in Student Government, serving as Senator-At-Large and Senate President. He is on the Judicial Board Committee for Sigma Chi Fraternity and Austin is on the SEAM Honors program Student Advisory Committee.
